Wellstyled.com is well worth a visit if you do any web design work.

I especially like their article on photo cards which steps through a really simple way of creating them.

Sometimes you are just looking for a simple or even complex way to display lots of images without going the whole wayof a full image gallery, well Bill Scott has developed a really neat carousel based on the Yahoo UI.

The carousel component manages a list of content (HTML LI elements within a UL) that can be displayed horizontally or vertically. The content can be scrolled back and forth with or without animation. The content can reference static HTML content or the list items can be created dynamically on-the-fly (with or without Ajax).

Well worth a look.

I came across this really simple favicon creator that lets you create favicons with transparent backgrounds.

It’s at Dynamic Drive and just requires you to upload your image.

You need to make sure your source image already has a transparent background, which means it should be a GIF or a PNG.

Meatball Sundae

Today I got an email from Amazon offering a pre-order discount on Seth Godins new book Meatball Sundae.

What is a meatball sundae? It’s something messy, disgusting and ineffective, the result of combining two perfectly good things that don’t go together. Meatballs are the basic staples, the things people need, the stuff that used to be marketed quite well with TV and other mass market techniques. The topping is new marketing: MySpace, websites, YouTube, and all of the magic that CEOs wish would shine atop their companies. The problem? New marketing is lousy at selling meatballs.

Seth has a Squidoo page that goes into a bit more detail here.

This does seem like Seth’s homage to Web 2.0, an easy to swallow guide for people who’s job title starts with a C. Like all Seth’s books I’m guessing it will be a good read, but not sure if the timing is quite right, I’ll grab a copy and update.

RoR Build a boat by starting with a train

RoR (Ruby on Rails) still appears to have some cachet in some circles, but as TechCrunch UK report one of it’s loudest proponents is getting disgruntled.

Zed Shaw, considered a God in the Rails community, today says “Rails Is A Ghetto” and tears into a number of leading Rails developers, the community in general, and a number of startups (and Google).

Ruby, as a language is great, but RoR is a framework, it’s like buying a chair from Ikea instead of getting someone to build you a bespoke one. Or as someone once said

…it’s like trying to turn a train into a boat. It’s do-able with a lot of glue.

Frameworks are great if you are churning out lots of similar web sites, it saves you having to do repetitive work. But even starting from scratch you can build just about anything in 3 months even with a small team and frameworks become a hindrance in these situations, unless you actually built the framework.

Digg your own story, spam comments on well known blogs, pay for stumbles all becoming more widespread.

Mike A (Techcrunch) has just been writing about WebGuild who have been spamming his comments to get some free publicity for their copycat conferences. Let’s be honest it takes some to feel sorry for Tim Web 2.0′Reilly with the $2000 ticket price, but i do, he’s worked hard to build a business around what was pretty much nothing - Web 2.0.

The biggest problem is that this WebGuild guy has gotten what he wanted, a mention on TechCrunch and if there’s no such thing as bad publicity then he’s come out of this ok.

Black hat marketing will always go on but as we complain we (including me by writing this) make it worth their while to spam comments, infringe trademarks…

Experiment23 have just launched a free service to supply you with your RSS feeds by SMS to your mobile phone.

They announced today the service, called Pingie but it only supports US carriers.

The space does however already have quite a few players some of which, FeedBeep have already closed their doors.

Dave Sifry, of Technorati fame obviously had time on his hands over the holiday period and knocked together a new service called hoosgot.

Hoosgot (pronounced “who’s got…”) is a simple way to ask who’s got what you’re looking for. Just put “hoosgot” in a blog post or a Twitter tweet and it’ll show up on Hoosgot.

It looks like a great idea, but as Dave acknowledges it could be killed by spam.

The questions are already coming in

Lazyweb, I need to get a couple hundred 8″x8″x8″ cardboard boxes, with custom printing on them. Anyone know what kind of company I’d call?
